Christmas lights in September? Yes. Many of you may be thinking that it is pretty early to be thinking about Christmas lights. In any case, the lights on the Square probably brings back many fond memories. Maybe enjoying the look on children's faces as they see the lights for the first time. Possibly even remembering your first time to see the lights. It has always been a tremendous sight.
Unfortunately, you now realize, that these are not recent memories because over the past few years, the square has grown darker and darker to the point that there are no lights at all.
What happened? Who pulled the plug on the lights? These are questions you may ask, but have now become irrelevant thanks to a few individuals who decided the lights must return. I do not know the whole story, but I am pleased to say that the lights will be back this year. The Harrison City of Lights committee has been formed for this purpose. Actually, "formed" might not be accurate. Recommissioned perhaps. Obviously, the committee existed in the past and has returned in large part to one of the original committee members, Zettie Johnson, and the now Chairman, Steve Pederson. In addition to Steve and Zettie, the committee also consists of Kathy Hefley, Heather Brewer, Erin Johnson, Jim and Alicia Bumgardner, and Charlie Smith. Every one of these individuals is deeply committed to this project. Whether it involves climbing on top of the buildings or wrapping donation boxes or chasing down Christmas wreaths, each one of them is fully vested and is doing exactly what is needed to get the lights back. While the committee does their part, they also need help from the public. While there have been donations and many volunteers, much more is needed in order to restore the Harrison City of Lights. In the inset photo, you see two major donors so far, Jeff Crockett (current mayoral candidate) and Ronnie Bell (on behalf of the Harrison Daily Times) presenting their checks to Kathy Hefley. Whether it is one dollar or one hundred dollars or one thousand dollars, every amount will help. At the bottom of this page, you will find a donation form that you can use to submit your donation. If you have ever had the experience to enjoy the Harrison City of Lights, I strongly encourage you to do your part to help restore this amazing part of our town. While I was fortunate to live here at a time when the lights were on, my children have not been able to experience the marvelous site. They are not the only ones and many of you, like myself, would like to enjoy the experience once again.
