A Time for True Giving
Written by Shane Bridges

With less than two weeks until Christmas, most people have already made plans about where they are going or who is coming to visit for the holidays. Most of the gifts have been purchased and wrapped. Most of the children (and even some adults) have already carefully inspected each present to determine the contents early. The radio is playing a Christmas song at least once an hour. The Christmas lights on the square are lit and the parade was a success.

Christmas is officially here.
While many feel like it is a time for Santa, gifts, and colorful lights, I personally like to look at Christmas as more of a time for family. I could not bear a single Christmas without spending time with my family and reminding my children about the true meaning of Christmas and the importance of understanding daily why we are all here.
Additionally, I like to remind them that giving is two things. First, it has nothing to do with what someone is going to give to them. Second, and most importantly, true giving is a sacrifice, and it does not necessarily have anything to do with a present in a box or money.
To truly give, you have to give up something. It may be money. It may be time. It may be a possession. It may mean doing something you would never dream of normally doing. It is not always easy. I always tell them that giving away a toy that they never play with and no longer care about is not full and true giving because there is no sacrifice. It is too easy.
Think about the things you have given this year. Are you truly giving? If so or not, I encourage you to step back and take a look at all that you have and think of a way you can truly give before the end of the year. It does not matter if you are wealthy or not or even if feel you have nothing to give. Trust me. Everyone has something to give.
Don't get me wrong. I am not trying to insult anyone or put down the idea of giving things that are no longer important in your life. They are appreciated by someone. But, could you give more, and how would it feel?
Just some thoughts. With that, I want to thank all of you for reading. I hope you enjoy the offers in this issue and I encourage anyone looking for a last minute gift to check out BOCODOD.com. And, from everyone at the Boone County Spotlight, we want to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
